Community Cohesion Advisory Group

Principle from the Community Strategy

  • Whatever we do we do so in a way that develops cohesive communities.

Community cohesion lies at the heart of what makes a safe and strong community and includes the notions of equality, inclusion and diversity.  The communities of Wakefield District have many things in common; they also have unique qualities that reflect the diversity, beliefs, interests and backgrounds of people living in different neighbourhoods.  We need to take account of the individual needs of different people, needs that reflect not just where they live but also their age, gender, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation.

By doing this we will make sure that we deal with all the priorities in the Community Strategy in a way that contributes to the development of cohesive communities across the District and that:

  • there is a common vision and sense of belonging for all communities.
  • the diversity of people's different backgrounds and circumstances are appreciated and positively valued.
  • those from different backgrounds have similar life opportunities.
  • strong and positive relationships are developed between people from different backgrounds - in the work place, in schools and within neighbourhoods.
