The work of the Healthier Communities Partnership is shaped by the health priorities set out in Developing Knowledge Communities, to improve health across the district, increase life expectancy and reduce health inequalities.
The partnerships specific aims are to reduce smoking and the impact of alcohol on health, lower premature mortality rates for cancer and circulatory diseases, increase participation in sport and exercise, reduce obesity, improve mental health and improve the wellbeing of older people.
Central to the Partnership’s terms of reference is an agreement to promote the principles of engagement, cohesion and sustainability through increasing the capacity and involvement of the voluntary sector. This includes promoting the health, wellbeing and engagement of children and placing culture at the heart of its work.
Alan Whittrick, Chair of the Healthier Communities Partnership said, “I am delighted to chair the Healthier Communities Partnership theme as it aligns closely with the work of the PCT and because the overall aims about partners working together to improve health can only be achieved by all agencies and groups in the district working together. Initial priorities are likely to be around the impact of an ageing population, and key health goals such as tackling obesity, teenage pregnancy, improved mental health and the impact of excessive alcohol”
