Airedale and Ferry Fryston

What’s it all about?

Neighbourhood Management is a ground breaking scheme which aims to make sure local people can play a key part in improving services in their community.

Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) is working with Wakefield Together to deliver the Airedale and Ferry Fryston Neighbourhood Management Pilot.

By working closely with tenants and residents, businesses, community organisations, the local authority and service providers, WDH aims to ensure services are improved for the benefit of the whole area - and according to what local people want.

How does it work?

The Neighbourhood Management process puts local people at the heart of the decision making process.

Through Neighbourhood Management people will be able to identify issues in their area, and decide which ones need addressing first. This will help to develop a local Strategy to improve the area.

The Board – Local people’s voices

A Board will be set up to make sure local people’s voices are heard, ensure organisations work together to improve services in the area, and promote the work of the Neighbourhood Management pilot.

The Board will consist of up to 15 people. Of these, there will be 8 local residents, 3 ward councillors and 4 independent representatives. VOX - Community Empowerment Network is leading the selection process for Board members, and it is hoped they will be in place by the end of 2007.

Events

So far we held a ‘Week of Action’ on Airedale’s Rivers Estate, and we have also launched the monthly Community Safety Café at The Airedale Centre.

The Cafe opened on 7 November 2007 and will be open on the first Wednesday of every month.  Here local people can discuss community safety issues with representatives from WDH, the Police, the Fire Service and Wakefield Council.

WDH is also currently working with ENCAMS, (who run the 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaign), to carry out an extensive environmental quality survey within the pilot area. The information gathered will be used by WDH, working alongside other partners in the Neighbourhood Management Pilot, to improve the quality of local neighbourhoods.
