Floor Target Area – Community Cohesion
Cohesion staff support – District Wide
This project is aimed at promoting community cohesion, a key priority for the WDP. One focus of the project is to improve engagement with ‘communities of interest’, particularly with Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities including asylum seekers and refugees. Work activities include advising emerging voluntary and community groups, and developing links between people of different cultures, faiths and communities.
Neighbourhood Renewal Learning Action Plan – District Wide
The project is in response to the Skills and Knowledge agenda around Neighbourhood Renewal. An action plan has been developed that will ensure that people are skilled to participate in the neighbourhood renewal agenda.
Community Transport – Havercroft, Ryhill & South Hiendley,South Kirkby, South Elmsall, Upton, Kinsley & Fitzwilliam
The funding is used to provide a community transport service in the South East of the District. The service aims to link people with opportunities for better health and to tackle social isolation.
Open Door – District Wide
The project offers a service for homeless and vulnerable people across the district. The worker operates on an outreach basis and assists homeless people in accessing appropriate accommodation.
St Swithins Youth Arts Club – Eastmoor Estate
The project engages young people aged 12 – 18 in artistic activities. The club is run by artists who encourage participants to engage creatively with the community. Outcomes include a reduction in vandalism in the area and the promotion of psychological well being amongst the club members.
Artefacts Loans – District Wide
The project seeks to develop an artefacts loans service to enrich the learning experience for disadvantaged groups. Some of the work is in schools where the use of the loaned items can be used to extend the curriculum and appeal to the broadest range of learning styles possible.
Targeted Reading Resources – most deprived areas in the district
The Education and Cultural Services is working with young people by providing and informal environment in venues where young people can feel at ease. The venues include libraries, the art gallery and residential homes. By offering an informal learning environment the aim is to raise the level of educational achievement of young people.
Theatre Trust – District Wide
In this project the theatre works with schools and community groups in Neighbourhood Renewal Areas. The activities include drama, dance workshops and the establishment of young people’s theatre groups. The project responds to gaps in the aims attached to the Cultural Strategy where young people requested more arts activities for their age group.
Wakefield Asian Strategy
This project assists children with education and sports activities. It promotes inter-community development and assists with community crime prevention. An information and access point is provided for employment and education for BME and the wider community.
