Improving Health Inequalities

Physical Activity Strategy (in community settings)

Implementing a physical activity strategy in the District, including increasing use of community-based sports facilities.

Wakefield Affordable Warmth

Improving the homes of vulnerable people who are suffering health problems as a result of their living environment.

Improving Health – Travellers and South Asian Communities

Aims to reduce health inequalities amongst South Asian and Traveller communities in Wakefield.  The aim is to increase public health knowledge and to conduct a health needs assessment in the two communities.

Five a Day – Wakefield East, Wakefield Central, Wakefield North, Hemsworth, South Kirkby, South Elmsall, Castleford, Ferry Fryston

The project seeks to encourage good diet in people in deprived communities, especially to encourage the increased consumption of fruit and veg.

Parent Peer Educators – District Wide

The objective of the project is to reduce teenage conceptions across the District.  A training programme has been developed to teach parents to act as group facilitators.  They then go on to work with parents of teenagers, enabling them to discuss issues of puberty and sex with their children. 

Improving Health - Older People’s Project

Works with older people in the EWPCT area who may be experiencing health inequalities, by encouraging them to take up services that will lead them towards better health.

Modernising Mental Health

To promote positive mental health in those who are experiencing mental health difficulties.  The programme of activities includes media training and possibly debt counselling and employment creation.  Also includes anti stigma and mental health awareness training for front line staff likely to have contact with mental health vulnerable individuals.

Walk in Centre – Hemsworth

To provide health support and education for the community, focussing on issues such as breast-feeding and healthy eating.

Expert Patient Programme

Helping people with long-term chronic conditions to develop new skills to manage their condition better.  Focusing on people with arthiritis, asthma, diabetes, heart disease and lung disease.

Intercept Project

This project provides one to one counselling and support for victims of domestic abuse and for perpetrator groups in satellite and drop in services.  There is also provision of an emergency hardship fund, and financing of recreational activites for women and children.

Willow Park Youth Project

As part of the Physical Activity Strategy in the District, extend and improve facilities for young people with the provision of new changing rooms and an all weather floodlit multi-use games area to be used for rugby, soccer, hockey, netball, basketball and other suitable outdoor games.
